A theme that scores 95 on a Macbook in San Francisco can score 38 on a mid-range Android in Cebu. Theme reviews on the Shopify Theme Store don't tell you that.

I tested 14 themes (5 free, 9 paid) on a real Filipino store across products from fashion, beauty, and home categories. Here's what actually performs in 2026 for PH operators.

How I tested

  • Identical store: 50 products, 8 collections, header + footer + 3 page sections.
  • Mobile-first: tested on iPhone 13, Galaxy A24 (mid-range Android most common in PH), and Lenovo K14.
  • Network: throttled to 4G (typical Globe/Smart speeds outside Metro Manila).
  • Metrics: PageSpeed Insights mobile, Largest Contentful Paint (LCP), interactive checkout time, and overall feel.
  • TL;DR rankings

    | Theme | Type | Mobile PSI | LCP | Best for |

    |-------|------|------------|-----|----------|

    | Dawn | Free | 91 | 1.8s | Almost any store |

    | Sense | Free | 88 | 2.1s | Beauty, food |

    | Craft | Free | 85 | 2.3s | Premium, slow-fashion |

    | Impulse | Paid ($380) | 86 | 2.2s | Fashion |

    | Prestige | Paid ($380) | 84 | 2.4s | Luxury, premium |

    | Empire | Paid ($380) | 82 | 2.5s | Large catalogs |

    Dawn (Shopify's reference theme)

Dawn is what Shopify ships as their reference for Online Store 2.0. It's the fastest theme on the store, period. If you're starting out, just use Dawn. You can customize it heavily without losing speed.

Strengths: lightning fast, accessible, well-documented, unlimited theme support from Shopify. Plays nicely with every app.

Weaknesses: looks a bit generic out of the box. You'll need to invest in good photography to stand out.

    Sense

Sense is Dawn's prettier sister, optimized for skincare and food. The default sections include ingredient highlights and texture-focused product blocks.

Strengths: fast, beauty-ready, more visual than Dawn.

Weaknesses: ingredient-style sections are wasted on non-beauty stores.

    Craft

Craft suits premium and slow-fashion brands. It includes editorial-style product layouts and thoughtful typography.

Strengths: feels premium without paid customization.

    Weaknesses: less flexible header/menu options.

    Impulse ($380, Archetype Themes)

If you're in fashion or apparel, Impulse is worth the $380. The promotion bars, lookbook section, and shop-the-look features turn fashion browsing into conversion.

Strengths: gorgeous out of the box, fast, fashion-tuned sections.

Weaknesses: it's $380. Make sure you're past ₱500K/month before splurging.

    Prestige ($380, Maestrooo)

Prestige is the choice for premium, luxury, or aspirational brands. The animations are subtle but elevated.

Strengths: premium feel without sacrificing speed (much).

Weaknesses: animations can feel heavy on slow Android.

    Empire ($380, Pixel Union)

Empire handles large catalogs better than any other theme I tested. If you have 500+ SKUs, Empire's mega-menu and faceted search are worth the price.

    Strengths: handles inventory-heavy stores.

Weaknesses: not the fastest. Cuts corners on speed for navigation depth.

    What to avoid

I won't name names, but several "premium" themes on the Shopify Theme Store load 8+ third-party scripts on first paint. PageSpeed scores under 50 on mobile. Your Pixel won't fire reliably, your bounce rate will spike, and ads will look inefficient when the real culprit is theme bloat.

    Red flags:
  • Too many demo videos on the listing.
  • Heavy 3D-style hero animations as defaults.
  • More than 6 default sections you'd actually use.
  • "Bundled apps" that promise functionality the theme should already have.
  • Theme decisions for common PH categories

  • Apparel/fashion: Dawn (free) or Impulse if you're scaling.
  • Beauty/skincare: Sense (free) or Prestige.
  • Food/snacks: Sense (free) — the ingredient blocks are perfect.
  • Home/furniture: Dawn (free) — fast even with high-res lifestyle photography.
  • Jewelry: Prestige — premium presentation matters here.
  • Electronics: Empire — for handling specs-heavy product pages.
  • Single hero product: Dawn with custom landing-page sections.
  • How to keep ANY theme fast

Theme choice gets you the foundation. Apps and lazy habits ruin it later.

    1. Cap your apps at 8. Audit monthly. Delete what you don't use — even uninstalled apps can leave residue.

    2. Lazy-load everything below the fold. Most modern themes do this; verify.

    3. Compress images before upload. TinyIMG or Squoosh. Target <200KB per product image.

    4. Remove unused sections from your page. Drag them out of the customizer.

    5. Audit Liquid customizations. Custom snippets that add 200ms each compound.

    6. Don't run two reviews apps. Pick Judge.me or Loox — not both.

    7. Don't run two cart drawers. Theme-native + an app drawer is a common bug.

What about page builders (PageFly, Shogun)?

I don't recommend them anymore. In 2026 the native theme editor with sections is powerful enough for 90% of stores. Page builders bloat your pages, slow your store, and tie your content to a vendor that can change pricing or shut down.

If you absolutely need a custom landing page, build a Liquid section in your theme. It's faster and lighter forever.

    Migration: switching themes safely

If you're already on a theme and want to switch:

    1. Duplicate your live theme. Don't touch it.

    2. Install the new theme as a draft.

    3. Rebuild key pages: home, product, collection, cart.

    4. Use Shopify's preview mode to QA on real devices.

    5. Run PageSpeed comparisons before and after.

    6. Schedule the swap during your slowest hour (usually 3–5 AM Manila time).

    7. Watch Pixel events for 24 hours after launch — make sure tracking still fires.
